Raw Materials Identification Site

This is a simple test to identify a certain product

what you will need is

  • Bowl of water
  • Soldering Iron or hot rod
  • Lighter
  • Small sample of material to test

TEST INFORMATION

* Denotes - Float / Sink Test in water

  1. Make sure no bubbles are left on sample
  2. Foamed plastics will float and some filled Polyolefins will sink
  3. Materials having a density greater than 1.0 g/cc will sink

** Denotes - Burn Test / Odour Test

  1. Work in a well ventilated area away from flammable surfaces and fluids.
  2. Wear safety glasses and use tongs or pliers to hold sample into flame.
  3. Never inhale vapours of burning plastic.
  4. Observ burning behaviour, check odour after plastic has extinguished and is no longer fuming, by waving vapours towards you.
  5. Burning behaviour may be modified by the presence of flame retardants or fillers in some plastics.
